ISSUES
- - Canadian based company rapidly expanding into the United States
- - Communication across decentralized locations was becoming difficult
- - Performance monitoring and project scheduling and costs
GOAL
Find a solution to enhance communication across teams, streamline growth process, and monitor accountability.
CHALLENGES
The Tim Hortons chain was founded in 1964 in Hamilton, Ontario. The chain's focus on top quality, always fresh product, value, great service, and community leadership has allowed it to grow into the largest quick service restaurant chain in Canada specializing in always fresh coffee, baked goods, and homestyle lunches. In 1995, Tim Hortons merged with Wendy's International, Inc., giving new focus and impetus to the expansion of the Tim Hortons concept in the United States. With its operations now farther from its Canadian headquarters, routine communication with its project teams became increasingly more difficult - and costly. As expenses such as additional travel, overnight shipping, and photocopying started to add up – and project schedules became more aggressive and complex – it was critical to find a solution to manage it all.
SOLUTIONS
Tim Hortons needed a centralized and consistent communication platform to help solve the challenges as a result of its expansion. After partnering with Expesite, Tim Hortons' various employees, vendors, and contractors were able to have 24/7/365 online access to the system. As a result, monitoring schedules, collaborating on project documents, tracking costs to budget, and reporting on projects have become easier and more standardized. Expesite helped Tim Hortons' associates deliver customized training specific to each user's role on the projects. In addition, accountability has improved across the board because each project team member now uses the system to provide regular status updates.
MEASUREABLE RESULTS
Over a two-year period, Expesite has helped Tim Hortons reduce pre-construction development costs and accelerate the construction process. Additionally, Expesite will provide a web-based archive that hosts the estimated 10 million documents Tim Hortons currently stores in its home office. Once the documents are moved to Expesite, Tim Hortons estimates that it will reclaim several thousand square feet of valuable floor space in its corporate offices in Oakville, Ontario.
“The benefits of the Expesite solution are clearly visible at many levels of our organization and we continuously find new ways to use the system, both on existing restaurants, and for future project planning.”
